Highlands County brings in good money for old things
Residents brave threatening skies to find bargains at Red Cross Fall Garage Sale

SEBRING -- Threatening skies couldn't keep people away from bargains. Treasure seekers came out Saturday, Oct. 27, to shop at the Highlands County Red Cross Fall Garage Sale. After all was said and done, the event netted roughly $1,500 in sales from donated books, records, tapes, appliances, dishes, glassware, clothes, furniture and tools.

There were large items like exercise equipment, a barbecue grill, tables and chairs, as well as kitchen appliances, glassware, dishes, handbags, golf club sets, vinyl LP's and tape cassettes, lots of clothes and lots of tools.

Volunteers sorted and priced the items, helped the crowd to find just the item they were looking for, and were willing to haggle a little, as the customers wanted. Staff and volunteers had asked people not to arrive before 7 a.m., but once again, the dark morning and slightly damp weather couldn't hold people off.

Thanks goes out to Floors Direct at 204 S. Ridgewood Drive, Sebring, and to Frames & Images & Awards at U.S. 27 North, Sebring, for also accepting donations on the Red Cross' behalf.

All proceeds benefit the American Red Cross efforts in Highlands County. Please help support your local Red Cross by volunteering time, energy, and funds to help provide for people in your community who are victims of large natural disasters or small single-family ones, like home fires. Youth volunteer Brock Jarvis helps people carry and load heavier objects in their cars, such as this propane grill.

Susan Kingston of Sebring lets her dog Sweet Dreams get a short walk over her rooftop before loading him in the car and leaving with the treasures she found at this season's garage sale.
